Business Consultant for Therapists - Hilary Stowers

Helping Mental Health Practice Owners Navigate
the Business Side of Private Practice.

Therapy Business Consulting - Hialry Stowers
How I Help

I help mental health practice owners navigate the business side of running and growing their practices. As a Therapist Business Advisor, I help you evaluate options, ask the right questions, assess opportunities, and identify resources & professional support aligned with your needs.

Why I'm Credible

I bring 25 years of business experience in financial services, including leadership in compliance, operations, sales, marketing, risk management, privacy, and business development. As a mental health professional and solo counseling practice owner, I also understand firsthand the challenges of balancing clinical work with business ownership.

Benefits of Working With Me

Gain an objective, business-minded perspective on your decisions, identify potential pitfalls before committing time or money, and feel more confident evaluating opportunities and determining your next steps.

You went to grad school to become a therapist, but where did you learn how to run a business?

Whether you're a relatively new or established solo or small-practice owner, you may have people to turn to for clinical consultation, but who helps you navigate business decisions?

Choosing vendors. Evaluating marketing investments. Understanding your business performance. Weighing opportunities. Figuring out your next step when you aren't sure what to do, or whose advice to trust.

Are you running your practice, or is your practice running you?

It can be lonely out there. With 25 years of business experience and firsthand understanding of the mental health profession, I help therapists strengthen their business judgment, evaluate their options, and make informed decisions with greater clarity and confidence.

My goal is to help you navigate business challenges while remaining in control of your practice. I help you ask the right questions, recognize potential gaps in your knowledge, assess opportunities, and determine the best path forward.

You don't have to figure out the business side alone.

Hilary Stowers brings a unique combination of extensive business expertise and firsthand experience as a mental health professional to her work as a Therapist Business Advisor for fellow clinicians and counseling practice owners.

Before making mental health counseling her second career, Hilary spent over two decades in financial services, holding leadership roles in compliance, operations, sales, marketing, risk management, privacy, and business development. She managed and supported hundreds of financial professionals, helped develop and implement policies and procedures, oversaw marketing and communications, supported recruiting and onboarding, and worked to strengthen the systems and operations that enable businesses to function effectively and grow.

As a mental health professional and solo counseling practice owner herself, Hilary understands the unique challenges therapists face in managing the business side of their practice while balancing the demands of clinical work. She brings a practical, experienced perspective to the business side of running a practice, helping therapists evaluate potential vendors and marketing partners, think through business decisions, identify useful resources, ask the right questions, and determine what professional support best aligns with their needs. Her goal is to serve as a knowledgeable, trusted sounding board, helping therapists make informed business decisions with greater clarity and confidence while remaining focused on what they do best: caring for their clients.

What We Work On

Most therapists have never worked out what they actually make an hour. Not the session rate. What is left after the practice split, the unpaid cancellations, the documentation, and the hours you give away outside the room.

I spent 25 years in business before I ever sat in a therapist's chair. I have been on both sides of that number, and I made a decision because of mine.

I help practice owners see what they are actually earning, what they are giving away, and what to do about it. The vendor calls, the marketing pitches, the proposals, the “I-am-not-sure-what-to-do-next” moments all come back to the same question. “Is this making you money or costing you money?” Nobody ever taught you how to tell. I will tell you what I would do.

  • Business Decision Support — A seasoned strategic partner for evaluating practice-related decisions, opportunities, and challenges.

  • Vendor & Partner Evaluation — Guidance when considering marketing agencies, website providers, CRM/EHR platforms, billing services, and other key vendors.

  • Marketing Partner Selection — Strategic guidance in identifying the right type of marketing support for your practice, evaluating potential companies, and assessing their expertise, approach, and alignment with your goals.

  • Practice Growth & Strategy — Brainstorming opportunities for practice growth, referral development, networking, speaking, community outreach, and other avenues for expanding visibility.

  • “Who Do I Need?” Guidance — Helping therapists identify the types of professionals, services, tools, or resources that may best address a particular business need.

  • Business Brainstorming — A confidential space to think through ideas, challenges, opportunities, and “I’m not sure what to do next” situations.

  • Fellow Practice Owner Perspective — Helping therapists shift from thinking primarily as clinicians to leading their practices as confident, strategic business owners who can navigate challenges, evaluate opportunities, and make informed decisions.

  • Strategic Second Opinion — Providing an objective, business-minded perspective on important practice decisions so therapists can weigh options, anticipate potential pitfalls, and move forward with a clearer sense of direction.

  • Proposal & Document Review — Providing a business-minded perspective on proposals, marketing materials, and practice-related documents to help therapists assess value, weigh options, and determine the best path forward.

Consulting Packages for Therapists

Building and sustaining a private practice takes more than clinical skill. As a fellow practice owner, I know how valuable it is to have someone to think through the decisions with, whether that’s refining your niche, setting your rates, growing your referrals, or creating systems that keep you from burning out.

Meaningful change rarely happens in a single conversation, so I offer consulting in weekly packages that give us time to build momentum. The longer the package, the lower your per-session rate, rewarding the consistency that leads to real results. Choose the option that fits where you are in your practice, and we’ll tailor each session to your goals.

Sometimes you don’t need a document written. You need someone with real-world business experience to look at it with you. I offer a seasoned, practical perspective on the materials and decisions that shape your practice, whether that’s a contract, new offerings, marketing proposals, or a plan you’re still working through.

Think of it as having a trusted colleague to bounce ideas off of, someone who will tell you what’s working, what’s not, and what you may be missing. Depending on your needs, feedback may be shared in writing, discussed over a virtual call, or both.

Please note: Document review is consultative in nature and does not constitute legal advice. For questions about legal compliance, please consult an attorney or your licensing board.

You Don't Have to Navigate the Business Side Alone.

You were trained to be a therapist, not necessarily a business owner. With 25 years of business experience and firsthand understanding of the mental health profession, I help therapists navigate the business decisions that come with owning and growing a practice.

Whether you're evaluating a marketing investment, considering a vendor, exploring a growth opportunity, or simply unsure what to do next, we'll work together to:

  1. Clarify the challenge: Define the business problem, goal, or decision you're facing.

  2. Evaluate your options: Explore potential solutions, weigh trade-offs, consider costs and risks, and identify the questions that matter most.

  3. Determine your next steps: Establish a practical path forward, including relevant resources or qualified professionals when appropriate.

My goal is to help you strengthen your business judgment, make well-informed choices, and identify practical next steps. I am here to offer an objective outside perspective, not to replace specialized professionals, but to help you determine what you need and how best to proceed.

Let's take your practice from good to great while protecting your time, energy, and focus on what matters most: your clients.
